Reality TV stars land in Temecula to promote fundraiser
The Reality Rally of Temecula Valley is for real.
If proof is needed, it will be on display at the Star Spangled 4th of July Parade as its float rolls down Old Town Front Street on Sunday.
Temecula resident Gillian Larson, a participant in the "Survivor Gabon" reality show, wanted to do something special for her adopted city, and almost two years ago she suggested a fundraising event that would include her "reality" pals and promote Temecula at the same time.
A fan of "The Amazing Race," Larson adapted that format and chose a recipient: Michelle's Place, a nonprofit resource center in Murrieta that provides support for victims of breast cancer. She also received approval from the Temecula City Council and recruited reality-show stars to appear.
Now the race is on. The Reality Rally of Temecula Valley is set for April 15-17.
"I have 108 reality stars from 28 different reality shows clamoring for a chance to come to our valley and race in our Reality Rally," Larson said. "It really is a reality, and everyone is rallying to the cause, Michelle's Place."
In the race, 50 or so teams of four participants, including one reality show celebrity, will take off from the Temecula Community Theater, the site of their first task, which is a search for gnomes, and continue through Temecula and finish in Old Town. The idea is to use Temecula's attractions as one of the stars of the event. The race ends with a sprint up the steps of the new City Hall.
In the 4th of July Parade, guest gnomes will appear on the float, wearing pink ribbon costumes as a reminder that the race benefits breast cancer support services. Twelve reality show stars also be aboard the float, which is a horse-drawn carriage.
During the day, the public will have a chance to meet the stars at various functions following the parade, including a wine tasting at Mount Palomar Winery from 3:45 to 6 p.m.
Stars scheduled to appear Sunday include Lisa and Scott Vinton, a Murrieta couple who were on "World's Strictest Parents." Others appeared on "The Amazing Race," "The Mole," and "Survivor."
The Reality Rally website, www.realityrally.com, will provide updates on the event.
